The Interview

What to Expect

We will interview about 90 candidates for seven categorical psychiatry positions beginning in October through December. Orientation for all new residents begins June 24, so you must be available for that start date and be licensed in Iowa by June 30.

What should I expect the night before my interview?

We will provide one night's stay at the Graduate Iowa City. We will meet you in the hotel lobby for dinner with current residents and spouses/significant others. Dress is informal. Casual attire-no tie or suit needed-but remember to wear a winter coat.

This get-together is an opportunity for you to meet us, your potential future colleagues, and we are here to answer your questions. Don’t be shy about asking about the things that are on your mind.

What should I expect on the interview day?

We will meet you at 7:45 a.m. in the main entrance of the hospital. We suggest business attire for your interview day.

The typical interview day includes:

  • An overview of the program with the chief resident
  • A welcome session from the chair of the department
  • Interviews with the program director, the associate program director, and two faculty members
  • Lunch with the residents
  • A tour of the facilities

The interview day typically concludes around 2:45 p.m.
