Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Family Medicine Residency Program Commitment to Inclusivity

Our program comes together under a common recognition that social injustices occur in society at institutional, state, and national levels, the origins of which are historic and pervasive. We believe in the value of the diverse backgrounds and perspectives of our residents, faculty, staff, and patients. We are making efforts to emphasize inclusive representation and address contemporary and historical inequities in our hospital and community.

DEI in Family Medicine

In 2020 our department instituted a Vice Chair position for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion who works closely with residents and faculty on institutional and community efforts. Mary Gallagher, MD currently holds this position.

Work in the Community

Our residency program's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion extends to clinical work in the community. Residents rotate in our local Iowa City Free Medical Clinic, which includes providing free prenatal care. Residents also have opportunities to rotate in our LGBTQ clinic, the Family Medicine International Clinic, and various underserved rural clinics.

Advocacy

During your residency experience, you can get involved in various advocacy opportunities at the institution, state, and national levels. This includes opportunities for participation in the Program Evaluation Committee, Physician Day on the Hill, Iowa Academy of Family Physicians Legislative Coffee sessions, UIHC House Staff Council, the AAFP Family Medicine Advocacy Summit, and more!
