Criteria for Candidacy

Training Program Eligibility Criteria for:

U.S. Allopathic Medical School Graduates

  • Application via the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) including:
    • A minimum of three letters of recommendation
      • Letters from emergency medicine supervisors are preferable if possible
      • One letter must be a SLOE (Standard Letter of Evaluation);
    • Dean’s letter;
    • Medical school transcript verifying appropriate medical education to train in a large teaching hospital;
    • Personal statement (there are no specific requirements for the personal statement but in general it should explain why you are interested in an emergency medicine residency and justify why you would be a good candidate); and
    • photograph.
    • We do not require a “Chairman’s Letter.”
  • Registration with the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) using #1203110C0 – Iowa Emergency Medicine Residency

Osteopathic Medical School Graduates

  • COMLEX scores, however we do prefer USMLE scores.
  • Application via the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) including:
    • A minimum of three letters of recommendation
      • Letters from emergency medicine supervisors are preferable if possible
      • One letter must be a SLOE (Standard Letter of Evaluation);
    • Dean’s letter;
    • Medical school transcript verifying appropriate medical education to train in a large teaching hospital;
    • Personal statement (there are no specific requirements for the personal statement but in general it should explain why you are interested in an emergency medicine residency and justify why you would be a good candidate); and
    • photograph.
    • We do not require a “Chairman’s Letter.”
  • Registration with the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) using #1203110C0 – Iowa Emergency Medicine Residency

International Medical School Graduates

  • USMLE Step 1, Step 2, and Step 3 all passed on first attempt. Scores must be available before you can be considered for an interview.
  • Passing grade on the CSA or USMLE Step 2 CS on first attempt.
  • Medical school graduation within the last 10 years.
  • Appropriate medical education to train in a large U.S. teaching hospital.
  • Evidence of one year of clinical training in an ACGME approved training program, previous emergency medicine residency experiences, or observership in the U.S. is strongly preferred.
  • Application via the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) including:

      • Letters from emergency medicine supervisors are preferable if possible
      • One letter must be a SLOE (Standard Letter of Evaluation);

Deadlines

Applications must be received no later than December 1st.

Interview priority will be given to applicants who have submitted applications through ERAS no later than October 1st.

Interviews begin in late October and conclude mid January.
