About the Program

The Acute Care Surgery Fellowship program at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC) is a one-year, non-accredited program that provides the opportunity for an in-depth focus on the nuances of trauma, emergency surgery and advanced operative experience. The ACS Fellow will have a broad exposure to both trauma and emergency general surgery services, with an opportunity for additional sub-specialty experiences on an individual basis (i.e. burn surgery). The ACS Fellowship program incorporates the fellow into a junior faculty role and provides graduated autonomy, allowing the develpment and fine tuning of surgical skills and decision making.

Acute Care Surgery fellows will attend weekly Department of Surgery Grand Rounds/Department M&M, weekly trauma and EGS conferences, monthly multidisciplinary trauma conferences, and participate in the trauma performance improvement and patient safety committee meetings.

Fellows work closely with every member in Acute Care Surgery division and will take overnight call 3-4 times per month with backup attending surgeon always available. There will be regular meetings between the Program Director and the fellow, and the Program Director will share informal feedback during these times including feedback from other division attendings.
