Surgery - General Residency

Welcome

Thank you for your interest in our Acute Care Fellowship Program at University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics. The UIHC is an 866-bed facility which includes 190 pediatric beds at the UI Stead Family Children's Hospital. In FY 2022 UIHC performed 35,400 major surgeries and 186,199 minor surgeries. UIHC is an accredited American College of Surgeons Level 1 Trauma Center, as well as an American Burn Association Level I Burn Center. The University of Iowa strives to create and foster a health system for all through health parity, diversity, equity and inclusion.

The Acute Care Surgery Fellowship program at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC) is a one-year non-accredited program that provides the opportunity for an in-depth focus on the nuances of trauma, emergency general surgery and advanced operative experience. The ACS Fellow will have broad exposure on both the trauma and emergency general surgery services, with opportunity for additional sub-specialty experiences on an individual basis (i.e. burn surgery). The UIHC program incorporates the fellow into a junior faculty role and provides graduated autonomy, allowing the development and fine tuning of surgical skills and decision making. The fellow will take overnight call 3-4 times per month with a backup attending surgeon always available.

ACS Fellows will attend weekly Department of Surgery Grand Rounds/Department M&M, weekly trauma and EGS conferences, monthly multidisciplinary trauma conferences, and participate in trauma performance improvement and patient safety committee meetings.

ACS Fellows will work closely with every member in the Acute Care Surgery Division. There will be regular meetings between the Program Director and the Fellow, and the Program Director will share informal feedback during these times including feedback from other division attendings.

ACS Fellowship has a start date of August 1, 2024.
