Access, Opportunity, and Diversity

Family Medicine Residency Program Commitment to Inclusivity

Our program comes together under a common recognition that social injustices occur in society at institutional, state, and national levels, the origins of which are historic and pervasive. We believe in the value of the diverse backgrounds and perspectives of our residents, faculty, staff, and patients. We are making efforts to emphasize inclusive representation and address contemporary and historical inequities in our hospital and community.

Diversity in Family Medicine

In 2020 our department instituted the Vice Chair for Access, Opportunity, and Diversity (formerly the Vice Chair for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) position, who works closely with residents and faculty on institutional and community efforts.

Community Engagement and Educational Opportunities

Our residency program's commitment to addressing social determinants of health extends to clinical work in the community. Residents rotate in our local Iowa City Free Medical Clinic during our curriculum. Residents also have access to numerous elective opportunities,  including LGBTQ clinic, the Family Medicine International Clinic, UI Mobile Clinic, Hope House, GuideLink Center, IMPACT, Healthy Kids School-Based Health Clinics, and various underserved rural clinics.

Advocacy

During your residency experience, you can get involved in various advocacy opportunities at the institution, state, and national levels. This includes opportunities for participation in the Program Evaluation Committee, Physician Day on the Hill, Iowa Academy of Family Physicians Legislative Coffee sessions, UIHC House Staff Council, the AAFP Family Medicine Advocacy Summit, and more!
