Our program only accepts applications using the Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS). Additionally, candidates are required to be registered with the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). Additional information regarding our selection and interview process can be reviewed below.

Eligibility criteria and selection process
- We welcome applicants who have graduated from qualified medical school programs in this country or abroad. Please see specific requirements below.
- We will begin reviewing ERAS applications on September 24, 2025. Applicants can begin submitting applications to our program on September 3, 2025. Applications are due by November 1, 2025.
- While all applications are reviewed, we give strong preference to interview those who signal our program (gold or silver).
- Have the 3 school types be icons/links as well: US Allopathic Medical School Graduates, US Osteopathic Medical School Graduates, International Medical School Graduates.
- US Allopathic Medical School Graduates (new link/icon)
- Completed USMLE Step 1 and 2
- Application via ERAS including:
- 3-4 letters of recommendation, of which 1 is the departmental/chair letter
- Deans letter (MSPE)
- Medical school transcript
- Personal statement

- US Osteopathic Medical School Graduates (new link/icon)
- Completed COMLEX Step 1 and Step 2 or USMLE Step 1 and 2 on the first attempt
- We will prioritize candidates that have USMLE Step 1 and 2 scores, but will consider candidates with strong COMLEX scores

Interview Day
- Interviews of selected candidates occur from October through January. All interview days are on Mondays or Fridays.
- All interviews this year will be virtual via Zoom.
- The night prior to your interview, we will host a casual social event with current residents. This is an informal time to meet some of our residents, learn more about the program and life in Iowa City.
- You will receive a personalized itinerary prior to your scheduled interview. Your day will start with a program overview, followed by interviews with the program director (Dr. Suneja), the associate program director for recruitment (Dr. Bryant), and another faculty member. You will also virtually attend noon conference, receive a virtual tour, and meet with the chief residents.
- The interview day is scheduled from 08:00 am - 1:35 pm
2nd Looks
- Our program will offer two optional, in-person, 2nd look events in February 2026 for candidates who interviewed at our program. Our rank list will be finalized prior to the 2nd looks.
