Welcome

The anesthesia residency at the University of Iowa is a four-year ACGME-accredited program, incorporating direct patient care into a learning environment with strong didactics. Our approach prepares graduates to enter their choice of private practice, academic practice, or fellowship.

Mission Statement

To develop and support innovative and successful physician anesthesiologists through being leaders in collaboration, education, research and clinical services.

Program Aims

The University of Iowa’s primary aim is to recruit, mentor, and train the next generation of outstanding ABA-certified anesthesiologists and perioperative physicians in a collaborative, patient-centered clinical teaching environment. The program supports residents in acquiring the knowledge, skills, and judgment to become the perioperative physicians that are highly-recruited for fellowships, private practice, or academic positions. The program strives to maintain an environment of educational excellence and inclusion where changes that are in the best interest of the trainees and the program are made enthusiastically.

All major anesthesia fellowships are represented at the University of Iowa, including:

  • Chronic pain
  • Pediatrics
  • Cardiac
  • Critical care
  • Regional anesthesia and acute pain management

Every element of your residency experience–didactics, clinical training, research and scholarly activity, and social or recreational opportunities–is designed to provide you with a foundation of excellence that will serve you well throughout your career.

After successfully completing the program, you will have already passed the BASIC examination and are eligible to take the Advanced Examination offered by the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA). This written exam is taken at the end of your residency training followed by the Applied Examination, which consists of a Standardized Oral Examination and Objective Structured Clinical Examination. Graduates of the program are fully qualified to enter any anesthesiology fellowship or obtain privileges to practice general anesthesiology.

We look forward to meeting you and welcoming you to the University of Iowa Department of Anesthesia.
