Welcome
The University of Iowa Geriatric Medicine Fellowship is a 12-month clinically based program focusing on the care of older patients. The Geriatric Medicine Fellowship Program provides excellent training for up to two board certified Family Medicine or Internal Medicine physicians who are committed to pursuing a career in clinical geriatrics. Five faculty geriatricians comprise the core teaching faculty of this one-year fellowship, with teaching also provided by a multidisciplinary geriatrics team. Fellows work with specialists in several areas of medicine during required and elective rotations. Geriatrics fellowship teaching occurs in the clinical setting, through didactics, conferences, staffings, rounds, journal clubs, mentor meetings, and through guided self-learning activities. Although the focus of faculty teaching is on preparing fellows to become expert clinicians, fellows also serve as teachers to the many medical students, pharmacy students, residents and other learners rotating in the geriatrics clinic, Family Medicine Inpatient Service, and Family Medicine Long Term Care rotations.
Why Geriatrics?
Geriatric medicine is one of the most challenging and rewarding fields in medicine! Geriatric medicine focuses on the unique biological, psychological, and social aspects of aging, as well as management of medical complexity.
