Clinical Rotations

University of Iowa Children's Hospital is a children's hospital within a large teaching hospital, The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. We are the only comprehensive health care center in Iowa offering the full range of pediatric pulmonary therapies.

Typically trainees will spend 11-14 months of the 36 months fellowship involved in clinical training. The clinical service allows fellows to assume responsibility for the Pediatric Pulmonology Service, including inpatient care, routine and emergency outpatient visits, and consultations, bronchoscopies and laryngoscopies. The service cares for children with a broad variety of lung diseases, including asthma, cystic fibrosis, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, bronchiolitis, pneumonias/empyemas, primary ciliary dyskinesia, bronchiectasis, interstitial lung diseases, granulomatous diseases of the lung, lung tumors, sleep-disordered breathing, apnea, central hypoventilation, and congenital lung anomalies. While on this service, the fellows interpret (with supervision) pulmonary function studies (with plans in the near future to include infant testing), gas exchange exercise studies, and polysomnograms.

Outpatient clinics are held in the Pediatric Specialty Clinics. The clinic area is contiguous with laboratories and radiology facilities. The pulmonary function laboratory is located within the clinic immediately adjacent to the patient care area. It is fully equipped with computerized spirometry, plethysmography, diffusing capacity, tests for airway hyper-responsiveness, exercise testing, and oximetry. The division also has a laboratory for performing clinical sleep studies and a fully equipped fiberoptic rhinolaryngoscopy and bronchoscopy service. Our laboratories are equipped with state-of-the-art hardware. The outpatient area is about a one minute walk from the newly remodeled pediatric inpatient pediatric area. The PICU and NICU are in contiguous buildings. Faculty offices are adjacent to the clinic. The outpatient service of the Pediatric Allergy and Pulmonary Division includes over 3,000 patient visits per year.
