Welcome

Thank you for your interest in the Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine Fellowship Program at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics. The program offers one or two-year blood banking fellowships for physicians interested in transfusion medicine.

Accepting applications for 2025-2026

The DeGowin Blood Center provides transfusion, donor center (whole blood and cytapheresis), therapeutic hemapheresis (includes hematopoietic progenitor collection and processing), and surgical tissue banking services to a large university tertiary care hospital. Thus, day-to-day exposure is provided to donor selection, blood banking serology, compatibility testing, preparation of special products (e.g., leukocyte-reduced, irradiated, washed), management of bleeding patients and transfusion reaction evaluation, blood center administration, plus special emphasis on all aspects of therapeutic hemapheresis, platelet immunology, fetal and neonatal transfusions, organ and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.
