Visiting Medical Students

The Department of Ophthalmology offers fourth-year electives to visiting medical students enrolled in an LCME-accredited medical school during the months of July, August, September, and October. These four-week rotations are approved and competitively arranged by the department.

Due to current institutional policies regarding outside medical student rotations during the COVID pandemic, we will continue to screen applicants and offer preliminary enrollment.

The 2024 4-week blocks (rotation dates cannot be adjusted):

  • Block 1 - 7/8/2024-8/2/2024
  • Block 2 - 8/5/2024-8/30/2024
  • Block 3 - 9/2/2024-9/27/2024
  • Block 4 - 9/30/2024-10/25/2024

Students interested should submit the following in a PDF to Tonya Looker.

  1. Name
  2. Class year
  3. E-mail
  4. Phone
  5. Name of medical school
  6. Name of undergraduate school/degree
  7. Current CV
  8. Medical school transcripts (Unofficial)
  9. USMLE 1 score
  10. Letter of Interest

Following approval from the Department of Ophthalmology, the applicant will need to complete the application process. Upon completion of the criteria, you will be allowed to formally apply and be approved as a visiting student. (Until this process is complete, the elective as approved first by the department is not "official"). Once you are accepted, we will send you a list of housing available near the hospital. Reasonably priced, four-week housing blocks can often be found with current medical students or residents. Applicants must have an up-to-date Visa.

If you have questions about this process or the following courses, please contact Tonya Looker. For a full description of our advanced clerkships, please review the Advanced Clerkship descriptions.
