CLIMBING THE NATIONAL RANKINGS

Our department moved up one spot to #6 in this year’s US News & World Report rankings! This is in addition to our residency program being ranked #3 nationally by Doximity and #5 by Ophthalmology Times—who also ranked us #4 in clinical care and #9 in research.

We are pleased by this acknowledgment, as it demonstrates the high regard Iowa holds among our ophthalmology peers and colleagues. Our high-quality patient care helps create opportunities for research advancements, as well as unique learning experiences for our trainees. This distinction is a testament to the collective effort of our physicians, researchers, and staff and reflects our continued commitment to providing the best training environment and clinical care possible." — Dr. Keith Carter, Lillian C. O'Brien and Dr. C.S. O'Brien Chair in Ophthalmology

Graduating from the “Victor Babes” University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Timisoara, Romania, in 1999, she commenced her early ophthalmology training at the same institution before relocating to the United States in 2007.

From 2007 to 2009, Dumitrescu pursued specialized postgraduate medical education in molecular ophthalmology and glaucoma through the Postdoctoral Research Scholar Fellowship at the University of Iowa Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences. She then expanded her expertise by completing the Pediatric Ophthalmology and Adult Strabismus Fellowship and the Fellowship in Pediatric Ophthalmic Genetics, both at the UI.

Her ophthalmology training reached fruition during the residency program at the University of Kansas Medical Center Department of Ophthalmology from 2012 to 2015. In 2015, Dumitrescu joined the faculty of the UI Department of Ophthalmology focusing on pediatric ophthalmology and pediatric inherited eye disorders. Throughout her career, Dumitrescu has been devoted to advancing the field of pediatric ophthalmology through research, clinical practice, and education, exemplifying her passion for high-quality patient care.”
