New! Vascular and Interventional Radiology Fellowship Program Openings Available for 2016 Fellowship Year

Monday, June 06, 2016

Vascular and Interventional Radiology (VIR) at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics recently obtained ACGME accreditation for a new, 1-year VIR fellowship, beginning July 2016.

The fellowship represents a solid clinical training opportunity with a strong emphasis on clinical care and procedural training in a leading academic institution.  The fellowship will prepare the trainee well for practice in either a private practice or academic setting. The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics is a leading busy tertiary care hospital and a level-1 trauma center, an American Cancer Society Center of Excellence, and a major transplantation center. Fellows will thus be exposed to diverse cases in interventional oncology, vascular disease, GI, GU, women’s health and pediatric intervention.  The trainee will be expected to perform over 1,000 VIR procedures during the year. Case mix includes TIPS, PTC, PCN, TACE, radioembolization, tumor ablation, the entire spectrum of embolotherapy, peripheral and visceral arteriography, thrombolysis and mechanical thrombectomy, balloon angioplasty, stenting and atherectomy.

A unique feature of the program is the close rapport between IR and vascular surgery, allowing the fellow to be closely involved in many aspects of peripheral arterial disease diagnosis and management. The fellow will have a one month rotation on vascular surgery, further enriching his/her experience in vascular care, including exposure to vascular interventions, carotid stenting and endovascular aneurysm repair. A new state-of-the art Children’s Hospital of Iowa is scheduled to open in December 2016, with anticipated further expansion of the pediatric intervention.

Qualified applicants must have satisfactorily completed an ACGME- or Canadian-accredited radiology residency, be board certified or board eligible (passed core exam) by the American Board of Radiology, passed USMLE Steps 1 and 2, and able to obtain a medical license in the state of Iowa prior to the start of the fellowship.
