Bruno Policeni, MD, MBA, Named Chair of the Department of Radiology

Bruno Policeni, portraitWe are excited to announce that Bruno Policeni, MD, MBA, has been appointed chair and DEO of the Department of Radiology.  He succeeds Dr. Colin Derdeyn, MD, who stepped down as chair in December 2023 after leading the department since 2015.

Dr. Policeni joined the faculty in 2006 after completing a neuroradiology fellowship at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine. He has since served in many leadership positions, including director of the diagnostic radiology residency program and director of the neuroradiology fellowship program.  Prior to becoming chair, he served as the vice chair for clinical operations and education, and has been serving as interim chair of the department since Dr. Derdeyn's departure.

Policeni is an internationally recognized expert on neuroradiology of head and neck cancers, stroke, and brain and spine disorders, and he chairs the American College of Radiology's Appropriateness Criteria Expert Panel on Neurological Imaging.

His many other accomplishments include establishing a leadership training program for medical directors and managers, as well as a quality and safety program within the UI's Department of Radiology.  Dr. Policeni is also a member of the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center and holds secondary appointments in the Departments of Otololaryngology and Oral Pathology, Radiology, and Medicine.

Policeni received his MD from the Faculdade de Medicina Valenca College of Medicine in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He went on to complete his diagnostic radiology residency at  Brazil’s National Institute of Cancer in Rio de Janeiro before coming to the UI to complete his fellowship in neuroradiology.  He also received an MBA from the UI Tippie College of Business.

We’re fortunate to have Bruno as a member of our leadership team, and I know he will continue to do an outstanding job leading the department moving forward.”
