University and Community Diversity

The University of Iowa's cultural traditions are world traditions that reach well beyond the state's borders in fostering understanding and cooperation. Internationally, the university is highly regarded for its programs in writing, engineering, the health sciences, and the arts, and each year its programs attract large numbers of international students and their families.

For a mid-sized American city, Iowa City features ethnic businesses, eating establishments, and cultural organizations that are on par with cities many times its size. Iowa City and its eastern Iowa neighbors celebrate the area's diverse population through a number of events and cultural offerings each year.

The University of Iowa is committed to enhancing the learning experience for everyone, including its talented and caring team of staff, faculty, and residents who are dedicated to building bridges that increase awareness and understanding of diversity in our community.

Women in Medicine

In 1855, The University of Iowa was the first public university to admit women on equal status with men. Almost 150 years later, the University of Iowa continues being on the forefront supporting women.
