Our Thirteenth Annual Pathology Research Day was held on Tuesday, October 17th 2023. Morning research presentations by faculty and trainees took place in the H.P. Smith Conference Room (W256 GH) and the plenary presentation, given by Dr. Stanley Perlman was held at 1:00 PM in 2117 MERF. The afternoon poster session was held in the MERF Atrium with 54 posters presented. The event is a key opportunity for Pathology researchers from all quarters of the Department to share their research projects, latest findings and recent presentations at national meetings. Collectively, there was a full schedule of cutting-edge work encompassing a variety of basic, translational and clinical topics.

Dr. Perlman’s plenary talk was titled, “Coronaviruses: From the Common Cold to a Pandemic + Sequelae”. Dr. Perlman is a Professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology and the University of Iowa Distinguished Chair. His talk focused on the basic biology and history of coronaviruses, their role in past disease outbreaks, a detailed overview of the recent COVID 19 pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2, and research from his laboratory exploring neural disfunction driven by SARS-CoV-2 infection.
