The Emory D. Warner Medical Student Research Fellowship

DESCRIPTION: The Emory Warner Fellowship is designed to give medical students valuable research experience exploring the cellular and molecular basis of disease. Fellows take 12 months out of their medical school curriculum to work closely with a primary  faculty member in one of the Department of Pathology research laboratories. At present, faculty members in Pathology have active research programs in immunology, muscular dystrophy, microbiology, neuroscience, tumor biology and cancer, and virology. Medical students choose the laboratory to perform their research and select a project with guidance from the faculty mentor. The fellowship was established to honor Dr. Emory Warner, a former Head of Pathology at the University of Iowa, and his long-standing commitment to providing a stimulating research experience for medical students.

ELIGIBILITY: Medical students may apply for the Emory Warner Fellowship after completion of the preclinical curriculum and the first set of core clerkships, and prior to graduation from the Carver College of Medicine. Selected Fellows typically start their research year early in July and return to their clerkships 12 months later.  Students must be in good academic standing in order to be eligible.

SUPPORT: The Emory Warner Fellowship provides an annual stipend of $30,000. During the fellowship year, students are registered with the College of Medicine to maintain health insurance, a cost paid by the fellowship award. The Emory Warner Fellowship also provides funds to attend a national scientific meeting directly related to the research project.

APPLICATION: Medical students interested in the Emory Warner Fellowship should submit the following by email to Dr. Kevin Legge (kevin-legge@uiowa.edu :

  • Current CV
  • Current CCOM transcript
  • Personal statement

The deadline for all application material is February 1. Applicants do not need to identify a research mentor prior to application. This is accomplished once the Fellow has been selected. The personal statement should highlight any prior research experience, state the motivation for performing a year-long research fellowship and indicate how a research fellowship may influence future career goals. Please note that personal statements need not be Pathology-centric. The goal of the program is to provide a 12 month research fellowship to motivated students regardless of their future specialty. All applicants are interviewed by the selection committee.
