Pathology Welcomes New Faculty: Drs. Thayyil, Eschbacher, Lopes, Kanotra, Ranguelov, and Griffin

Abdullah Thayyil, MD 

Dr. Abdullah Thayyil joins UI Pathology faculty as a member of the Renal Pathology subspecialty team.  Dr. Thayyil received his M.D. from Calicut (Kozhikode) Medical College in Kerala, India. He began his Pathology training at Long Island College Hospital and completed his Pathology residency at Winthrop University Hospital in Mineola, NY.  After a fellowship in Renal Pathology at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, Dr. Thayyil held several renal pathology positions before joining the Department of Pathology as a renal pathologist here at the University of Iowa from 2005-2013 (last 4 years as a Clinical Associate Professor). Following this, he held several consulting positions in Saudi Arabia, India, and Bahrain before joining the Department of Pathology at East Carolina University in Greenville, NC in 2019, as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Pathology. 


Kathryn Eschbacher, MDKathryn Eschbacher, MD 

Dr. Kathryn Eschbacher joins UI Pathology faculty as a member of the Neuropathology subspecialty team.  She received her M.D. from St. Louis University School of Medicine.  She recently finished her neuropathology fellowship in the combined AP/NP 4-year training program at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN, where she also served as a Chief Resident.  Her recent first author publications cover a variety of glial neoplasms, including myxopapillary ependymoma and posterior fossa midline gliomas in adults, and other neuropathology related topics, such as granulomatous amoebic encephalitis. She enjoys spending time outdoors (hiking or snowboarding) and with her two cats.


Osorio Lopes Abath Neto, MD, PhDOsorio Lopes Abath Neto, MD, PhD

Dr. Lopes received his M.D. from Universidade Federal da Paraiba (UFPB), Joao Pessoa, Brazil. He did residency training in neurology and a fellowship in neuromuscular disorders including muscle pathology in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Osorio then completed a PhD in neurology and acquired further research experience in the molecular bases of inherited neuromuscular disorders and bioinformatics in Strasbourg, France, and at the NINDS in Bethesda, MD. While at the NIH, he changed his career focus to the pathologic aspects of neurogenetic disorders and decided to pursue anatomic pathology training at the NCI, followed by a neuropathology fellowship at UPMC (Pittsburgh). While at these institutions, he became involved in projects utilizing methylation profiling to investigate brain tumors, a technique he intends to apply to further investigate neuromuscular disorders. When not at work, Osorio enjoys spending time with his wife and daughters, reading, traveling, and engaging in computer geekiness.


Rostislav (Rossy) Ranguelov, MDRostislav (Rossy) Ranguelov, MD 

Dr. Rostislav Ranguelov joins UI Pathology as a member of the Surgical Pathology team, with clinical service duties in GI/Liver and SP.  Dr. Ranguelov received his M.D. from Medical University in Sofia, Bulgaria. After beginning Anatomic Pathology training at Pirogov National Institute for Emergency Medicine in Sofia, Bulgaria, he relocated to Iowa City, Iowa, where he completed residency training in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at UIHC. Following his Pathology residency, he completed fellowships in Surgical Pathology, and Gastrointestinal and Liver Pathology at the University of Washington in Seattle. Dr. Ranguelov practiced for over 16 years as a general surgical pathologist with focus in GI and liver pathology and served as an internal consultant for GI, liver and pancreatic pathology at CellNetix Pathology, PLLC, Swedish Medical Center in Seattle, WA.


Jhanvi Kanotra, MDJhanvi Kanotra, MD

Dr. Jhanvi Kanotra joins UI Pathology faculty as a member of the Clinical Pathology team, with clinical service duties in Molecular Pathology and Clinical Chemistry services.  Dr. Kanotra received her M.B.B.S. from the Government Medical College in Srinagar, India. She did residency training in Family Medicine at Shanti Mukand Hospital in New Delhi, India and 3 years of Anatomical and Clinical Pathology training at Louisiana State University in New Orleans, LA before relocating to Iowa City, IA. Dr. Kanotra completed her Pathology residency training at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, as well as a Molecular Pathology and Genetics Fellowship. 


Daniel Griffin, MDDaniel Griffin, MD

Dr. Daniel Griffin joins UI Pathology faculty as a member of the Surgical Pathology team, with clinical service duties in SP (with Gyn focus) and Cytopathology.  Dr. Griffin received his M.D. from St. Louis University in St. Louis, Missouri. He then completed an Anatomic and Clinical Pathology residency program and a Cytopathology Fellowship at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, KY, followed by a Surgical Pathology Fellowship with an emphasis in Gynecologic Pathology at the Department of Pathology, University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock, AR.
