Family Medicine Vision Statement

The Family Medicine Department trains physicians for Iowa and beyond to be leaders in patient-centered, team-based care delivery. The Family Medicine Department promotes family medicine within the University and develops and advocates the family medicine primary care strategy.

Strengths

The department is a recipient of a 2012 American Academy of Family Physicians Top Ten Award, which recognizes LCME-accredited medical schools for their exceptional role in advocating for the specialty of family medicine. These awards were created to promote the goal of having more U.S. medical school graduates enter the specialty of family medicine each year. Medical schools are recognized for their high performance in graduating students into first-year positions in family medicine residency programs over a three year average period. The 2012 award average covers the years 2008-2009, 2009-2010, and 2010-2011.

The department currently has 7 practice locations in and around Iowa City. Its residency programs are located across the state of Iowa. Its educational and research programs are strong. The department has been able to recruit six well-qualified physicians in the last six months.
