Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences faculty members are highly respected in their fields of expertise and involved in many interesting activities in/out of work. Each month this "Faculty Feature" will take an opportunity to share a little about individual faculty members – who they are and what they are up to.

  • Christine Sindt, OD, FAAO
  • Director, Contact Lens Service
  • Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences
  • Faculty Member since 1995

Dr. Sindt is always seeking to improve the lens to cornea and ocular surface design profiles. This includes both scleral lens and corneal gas permeable platforms. She has several patents which expand the classical thinking of what shapes contact lenses can be.

She collaborates with others to introduce higher order optics to a contact lens platform with exceptional accuracy and stability. This includes development of smart contact lens platforms.

She remains excited about the next generation of what we will come to expect from our vision.

Professional recognition and leadership include:

  • Past chair of the American Optometric Association Contact Lens and Cornea Section
  • Co-founder and past president of the Scleral Lens Education Society
  • Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry

"I love that while our faculty are all pursuing academic and research excellence, our main focus is patient care…I believe our patients and our faculty benefit from our group approach and it allows me to focus on the subspecialty I love best."

What are your favorite activities, hobbies, or interests outside of work?

I have 4 children and a husband - that is most of my outside of work interests. I have the privilege of doing a fair bit of traveling and teaching. So I think my favorite outside work activity is spending time with family and friends.

If you could have one "superhero" power, what would it be?

If I had a superhero power, I think I would want to slow down time, so perhaps I could linger in a moment with someone special or maybe get enough sleep.
