Retina specialists from the UI Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences were prominent throughout the 43rd Annual Macula Society Meeting in February.
Most significant was the awarding of the 2020 Lawrence J. Singerman Medal to Dr. Stephen Russell. The award is given to an outstanding Macula Society member for contributions to the advancement of science through Retinal Clinical Trials. Russell was recognized for his pioneering work in the field of gene therapy for inherited eye disease.

Other highlights included Society election of Dr. Ian Han which our department's membership to ten. University of Iowa faculty and emeritus faculty who are members of the Macula Society include Drs. Michael Abramoff, Culver Boldt, James Folk, Sohan Hayreh, Robert Mullins, Stephen Russell, Elliott Sohn, Edwin Stone, and Thomas Weingeist. Folk is a recent past president and Sohn heads the new member group.
