UI plays key role in study of uveitis treatment

James Folk, MD, professor of ophthalmology and vitreoretinal specialist, led a clinical research team at the University of Iowa as part of a multi-center clinical trial in patients with Uveitis. Funded by the National Eye Institute, the trial known as the POINT Trial compared treatments for complications of inflammatory eye disease.

The trial determined that therapy applied directly inside the eye is best for treating uveitic macular edema.

“Inflammation in the eye is called uveitis.  It is one of the leading causes of vision loss in working age adults. The main cause of vision loss is swelling of the central retina called macular edema. This study provides important new information about treatments used to reduce the swelling and preserve or improve vision,” states Dr. Folk.

Several members of the clinical staff were involved in the study including clinical research study coordinators, photographers, clinical technicians, and Ian Han, MD, as a study Co-Investigator.
