A preclinical study by IVR researchers has found that there is an adverse immune response to allogenic subretinal stem cell transplantation.

There have been a number of recent studies on stem cell strategies focused on replacement of retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells and the topic continues to be of interest to researchers. This article, by researchers at The University of Iowa, reports that subretinal injection of allogenic induced pluripotent stem cell-derived RPE cells can induce an immune response. These findings suggest that immunologically matched or autologous donor cells should be considered for clinical RPE cell replacement.
