Dumitrescu named chair of genetic eye disorders committee for AAPOS

Alina Dumitrescu, MDAlina Dumitrescu, MD, Clinical Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, was recently named chair of the Genetic Eye Disorders Committee for the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (AAPOS). Dr. Dumitrescu was formerly a member of the committee, which has as its mission educating members of AAPOS about current genetic testing, diagnosis and treatment for patients with inherited eye disorders. The committee sponsors a workshop each year at the annual meeting. In recent years, the AAPOS Genetic Eye Disorder Committee has been an important resource for AAPOS leadership as they navigate the new landscape of treatment and clinical trials for previously untreatable genetic eye disorders. Dr. Dumitrescu will lead the Committee's workshop at the 2021 meeting. The Committee also maintains a curated list of clinical trials recruiting pediatric patients that can be accessed by physicians or patients. Arlene Drack, MD, Ronald V. Keech, MD, Professor in Ophthalmic Genetics, and Professor of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, was the founder of the AAPOS Genetic Eye Disorder task force, which was subsequently made into a standing Committee, and served as the first chair. Iowa remains a leader in genetic eye disorders with two of our faculty playing an important role in the international AAPOS community. Congratulations to Dr. Dumitrescu for being selected for this vital Committee leadership position!
