The goal of our 1-year non-accredited fellowship in Cardiothoracic Imaging is for fellows to acquire the knowledge and skills to become outstanding cardiothoracic radiologists through participation in research, teaching and a broad range of clinical activities.
Core and Electives
Our 12-month fellowship program is tailored to each fellow’s interest and prior experiences and offers fellows flexibility in structuring the program to their individual goals. At least 80% of the fellowship is dedicated to thoracic imaging and cardiovascular imaging. Fellows can further specialize in either of these or choose elective time in other sections with the approval of the program director. While the fellowship is primarily diagnostic, fellows with appropriate background and interest can obtain experience in interventional thoracic procedures collaboration with our Interventional Radiology Section.
Hands-on Training
The fellowship provides a broad range of hands-on training including:
- Outpatient/inpatient chest radiography
- Critical care portable chest radiography and chest fluoroscopy
- Thoracic computed tomography (CT), (including routine chest CT, high-resolution chest CT, pulmonary CT angiography (CTA), aortic CTA and thoracic PET/CT)
- Thoracic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
- Cardiac CT, cardiac MRI, and cardiac Nuclear Medicine
Imaging facilities allow fellows the full range of thoracic and cardiac imaging:2 FORCE ultrafast Dual energy CT scanners
- 2 Force Dual energy ultrafast scanners
- 2 additional CT scanners
- 1 Drive superfast Dual energy CT scanner
- Four 1.5 T and one 3 T MRI scanners and two PET/CT scanners
- 3-D Advanced Imaging Processing Laboratory for training in Picture Archiving and Communications Systems (PACS) and advanced image postprocessing and analysis through the section’s work
Research and Teaching
The department is well-resourced to support fellows’ research. Starting in the third month of fellowship, fellows may receive half academic day per week to devote to research projects approved by the program director. Travel funds are available for fellows presenting at national conferences. The division’s faculty have won awards for their teaching and will provide opportunities for fellows to teach medical students and residents.
