Advanced Lung Disease and Transplantation

About the Program

The main goals of the program include:

  • Acquire clinical skills required to diagnose and evaluate patients with advanced lung disease to determine potential candidacy for transplantation.
  • Acquire experience in managing multi-organ donors and selecting potential donor organs.
  • Acquire knowledge of the organ procurement process.
  • Become familiar with the various surgical methods of lung transplant surgery.
  • Acquire clinical skills in the appropriate peri-operative and intensive care management of lung transplant recipients.
  • Acquire specific skills and experience in managing patients with lung failure and supported with various extracorporeal membrane oxygenation modalities.
  • Acquire clinical skills in the outpatient management of transplant recipients, including rejection and infection prophylaxis, surveillance, and treatment.
  • Acquire advanced bronchoscopy skills necessary for managing lung transplant recipients.
  • Acquire in-depth knowledge of the immunologic theories and principles behind the strategies for managing rejection and infection and develop an extensive understanding of the pharmacological principles behind the use of immunosuppression and anti-infective agents.
  • Acquire the skills and experience in interpretation of lung biopsies regarding the diagnosis of rejection and infection, as well as the knowledge of pathology procedures (i.e., sample preparation, staining methods) necessary to identify pathology unique to the lung allograft.
  • Acquire the skills and experience in performing clinical/translational transplant research to initiate a career in academic cardiopulmonary transplant medicine.

Fellows as Clinician Educators (FACE)

The Fellows as Clinician Educators (FACE) Program is designed to introduce future clinician-educators to a set of skills which may be of use in their career. The program presents concepts of educational design and research, lecture development, evaluation, observation and feedback. At the conclusion of the program, FACE participants are required to develop a teaching portfolio.

Board Certification

Eligibility Criteria

All fellow trainees selected for the Advanced Lung Disease and Transplantation fellowship are required to have completed an ACGME accredited Pulmonary and Critical Care fellowship.
